DISASTER RELIEF

Because of its location, Indonesia is no stranger to natural disasters – earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis, floods, etc. – and the poor of Indonesia are most often affected by these disasters.  YSA has often served suffering communities throughout Indonesia, focusing our relief efforts on those communities which have been overlooked by larger organizations.

Since 2003, YSA has provided relief assistance in the following places and ways:

  • 2003   Earthquake - Nabire, Papua

    • Focus: drinking water, mosquito nets, temporary shelters, and trauma counselling

  • 2004   Tsunami - Aceh, North Sumatera

    • Focus: evacuation of bodies, cleaning of houses, community surveys, clean water and food relief, re-establishment of small business, trauma counselling, temporary shelters  

  • 2005   Landslide - Leuwih Gajah, West Java

    • Focus: clean up, trauma counselling

  • 2006   Tsunami - Pangandaran, West Java

    • Focus: clean up, pumping out wells, micro-loans, providing building materials, food relief, distribution of blankets and tarps, relief training for other organizations

  • 2006   Earthquake - Yogyakarta, East Java

    • Focus: food relief, provision of materials for rebuilding homes, clean up, distribution of blankets and tarps

  • 2009   Earthquake - Pangalengan, West Java

    • Focus: food and clean water relief, distribution of blankets and tarps, provision of materials for rebuilding homes

  • 2010   Volcanic Eruption - Klaten, East Java

    • Focus: road cleaning, clearing paths

  • 2013   Flood - Bojong Soang, West Java

    • Focus: community kitchen for food relief

  • 2014   Flood - Bojong Soang, West Java

    • Focus: community kitchen for food relief

  • 2014   Volcanic Eruption - Laharpang, East Java

    • Focus: food relief, clothing distribution, repair of rural spring water system

  • 2016   Flood - Garut, West Java

    • Focus: cleaning roads, food and clean water relief, distribution of blankets and tarps

  • 2018   Earthquake - Lombok, NTT​

    • Focus: drinking water, temporary shelters, children's trauma counselling, food distribution, clean up​

  • 2020   Covid-19 Pandemic - West Java​

    • Focus: emergency food relief, water filters, small business grants, family gardens​
